About OpenOffice
For some time we have been seeking effective alternatives to the Microsoft Office suite of software tools. Microsoft products are becoming more and more expensive and more and more tied to particularly versions of their Operating System.
In OpenOffice we have discovered a free to download, free to use, (and free of spyware, adware and malware) suite of software tools to rival MS Office.
OpenOffice includes:
- OpenOffice Writer - an alternative to MS Word with most of the features of MS Word
- OpenOffice Calc - an alternative to MS Excel for spreadsheets, calculations etc
- OpenOffice Base - an alternative to MS Access for database creation in dBase flat file & external relational databases, such as MySQL or Oracle.
- OpenOffice Impress - an alternative to MS PowerPoint for creating slideshows etc
- OpenOffice Draw - an alternative to MS Publisher for desktop publishing but more importantly its a drawing tool to create graphics & diagrams with built-in export Flash (swf)
- OpenOffice Math - an equation editor for text documents but can be used in standalone mode
One major benefit is that OpenOffice allows you to save your documents in a variety of formats including MSOffice Suite word, excel etc formats. Therefore by using OpenOffice you get the best of both worlds - a move away from dependancy on Microsoft with the ability to send documents to customers, suppliers etc in a common format they are likely to be able to use.
